Which regions do you cover? Do you work only on islands?
Our team is made up of people connected to various islands, and we specialize in living and working in island communities. However, we are not exclusively a production company for remote islands. In the dialects of Okinawa and Amami, the word “Shima” refers to one’s home island—the place you were born, raised, and feel connected to. Based in Yakushima, Kagoshima, we travel to islands across Japan and around the world for filming. We also have bilingual cinematographers who can work in English, giving us a strong advantage in inbound projects. We take great care in capturing the nature, culture, and everyday life of your “Shima” with sincerity and respect.
Do you offer location coordination services without filming?
Absolutely. With our network of local guides and filmmakers across various islands, we can assist with location scouting, coordination, or even drone flight applications.
Can you handle narration and music as well?
Yes. We collaborate with professional narrators and composers to create original music and voiceovers that match your project’s tone. We can also arrange models or on-screen talent when needed.

What is Cinacinema?
Shima Cinema is an independently produced “island-focused film project” by Island Films. Today, with smartphones and computers, you can watch videos anywhere. But because of that convenience, the opportunity for people to gather and watch a film together may be disappearing. Shima Cinema hosts screening events for our films, placing value on sharing the same moment with everyone present in the space.
